A modern road is being made for tourists in Paharpur Buddhvihar

A modern road is being made for tourists in Paharpur Buddhvihar

Naogaon's Paharpur Buddhist Vihar, the largest historical monument of South Asia recognized by UNESCO, is about to enter a new era through modern roads. In this century-old historical sight, domestic and foreign tourists had to come to Buddha Vihar through a narrow road full of the risk of death.

Tourists coming to Buddhvihar want the proposed modern highway to be constructed soon instead of this unusable road of Mandatta period. Mohammad Fazlul Karim Arju, assistant director of historical Paharpur Buddhist Vihara said, Paharpur is the largest Vihara in South Asia located in Paharpur Union of Badalgachi Upazila of Naogaon. Its original name is Sompur Bihar.

In 1985, UNESCO recognized it as a world heritage. It was originally the capital of the Pala kingdom and the university of that time. Monks used to study here at that time. There is a gathering of visitors from home and abroad throughout the year. Various plans taken by the government to make this Bihar tourist friendly and modernized have been implemented so far.

But the tourists are constantly suffering due to the lack of a modern road from the main road to Buddhvihar. Due to the 10 dangerous bends on the old narrow two-and-a-half-kilometer road from the main road, tourists have to leave the vehicles far away and come on foot when traffic jams occur during various festivals.

Besides, accidents happen regularly while taking turns. Complaints are constantly received from tourists about this unusable road. Due to the lack of a modern wide road, domestic and foreign tourists have to suffer year after year.

So there is no alternative to modernize the communication system to further advance the tourism sector. From the urgency of that need, with the full cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and the dedicated efforts of Naogaon Road Division Executive Engineer Rashedul Haque Sir.

A modern connecting road is going to be constructed. Paharpur Buddhist monastery will be further developed if this road is constructed. Double the number of tourists will come to this Buddhist monastery and more revenue will be added to the government's account and the wheels of the local economy will be renewed.

Noore Alam Siddique, sub-divisional engineer of Naogaon road department, said that preliminary work of constructing a modern road from Naogaon-Jaipurhat highway to Buddhbihar has been started. The new road will connect the main road to the north-west side of Buddhvihar. And it is through this road that the tourists will enter through the main gate of Buddha Vihar and see this sign.

There will be adequate car parking facilities at the junction of the new road. Cafeteria, footpath for tourists, market, driver rest, VIP rest all with modern facilities. All paperwork for road construction has already been completed. Executive Engineer of Naogaon Road Division.

Rashedul Haque said, I knew that to go to such historical places, one has to cross a road like a death trap. This matter came to my attention while visiting the first Buddhist monastery of my life. That's when I decided to build a modern road to come to Buddha Vihar.

After that, with the cooperation of the Assistant Director of Bihar, I have already completed all the processes of constructing a modern road with a length of about 500 meters. Application for land acquisition for road construction has been submitted to the district administration.

As soon as I get the land acquisition, I will start the road construction work as soon as possible. I am hopeful that if everything goes well, we will be able to connect the historical Buddhist monastery with modern communication system within this year.

District Commissioner Md. Golam Mawla said, there is no alternative to modern quality sustainable communication system to advance the tourism sector. If we can connect every historical place of the country with modern communication system.

Then the potential tourism sector will be able to play a role as a source of gold mine for the country. I hope to acquire the land for the road soon and hand it over to the road department. Apart from this, the road department will be given full cooperation from the district administration.
