35 Somali pirates taken to India
The Indian Navy handed over 35 Somali pirates to the Mumbai Police on the 100th day of its anti-piracy operation in the Red Sea. After nearly a decade of inactivity, pirate violence in the Red Sea is on the rise again. India is the most militarily powerful country in the Gulf of Aden and northern Arabian Sea.
The Indian Navy has launched an anti-piracy campaign to suppress piracy in the region due to a sudden increase in important sea routes. As part of an operation last week they seized the Malta-flagged cargo ship MV Rouen and rescued 17 crew and arrested 35 Somali pirates.
The MV Rouen was hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia last December. Pirates are believed to have recently hijacked the Bangladesh-flagged cargo ship MV Abdullah using the MV Rouen and taken 21 Bangladeshi sailors hostage.
The 35 pirates arrested by the Indian Navy can be sentenced to life in prison under the country's Anti-Piracy Act 2022. Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar told a press conference on the 100th day of their operation that Somali pirates used the MV Rouen as a 'mother ship' to attack other vessels.
The Indian Navy assisted several ships that were attacked. Ar Hari Kumar also said that after the Houthi drone attack, they recovered their ruins. Said, "We have no dispute with anyone."
